The 3825 will take more memory than the 2811, so the 3825 would be considered more scalable than the 2811. If you look at the throughput capabilities the 3825 will have a higher rating for packets per second and a higher bandwidth capability. You could terminate a T3/E3 on the 3825 but I am not sure that the 2811 would be capable of that. Setting the Speed and Duplex Mode The GE ports of the Cisco 3825 router can run in full- or half- duplex mode and at 1000 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 10 Mbps. The Cisco 3825 router has an auto-negotiation feature that allows the router to negotiate the speed and duplex mode with the corresponding interface at the other end of the connection.

The Cisco 3825 are indeed End of Life and was directly replaced by 3900 ISRs. However, it is good that you are already looking at ASR for scalability. There are also the ASR 1002 and 1002-X if you are looking at 5Gbs out of the box. Check this link for more details: (
